Daniel Cormier is a close friend of Islam Makhachev. In his ESPN show, DC and RC, Cormier provided his thoughts about what was next for Islam Makhachev. Cormier’s proposed plan did not align with co-host Ryan Clark. Many presumed that either Justin Gaethje or Charles Oliveira would fight Islam Makhachev next. Interstingly, Cormier proposed the idea of Conor McGregor fighting Islam Makhachev next.
Cormier’s suggestion might rub fans the wrong way. This is what Cormier said:
Its built in. Its built in. It’s the biggest money fight the UFC could make and why not. You have Islam Makhachev, who looks to be a guy that looks to be a dominant champion. In order to have that dominant champion go to the next level of superstardom, you need a foil. You need a guy that can elevate him. The guy that can elevate him to that level is Conor McGregor.Daniel Cormier on the DC & RC show.
Cormier is known for making outrageous remarks on the show, and co-host Ryan Clark perceived it that way. It’s worth noting that Dana White had already expressed support for the idea of Oliveira vs. Makhachev instead of a rematch between Makhachev and Gaethje. However, White did not confirm that Oliveira was guaranteed a title shot next.
As far as Islam Makhachev is concerned, he is ready to take any fighter the UFC puts in front of him. Previously, he insinuated his interest in fighting for the welterweight title next. However, he was nonchalant when Daniel Cormier asked about his future plan in the post-fight speech.
Daniel Cormier cites Dustin Poirer and Khabib Nurmagomedov’s fights with Conor McGregor as the pathway for Islam Makhachev
In ESPN’s DC and RC show hosted by Ryan Clark and Daniel Cormier, Cormier said that Islam Makhachev should fight Conor McGregor next. Ryan Clarke did not agree with the thought and put forth the names of Charles Oliveira and Justin Gaethje.
However, Cormier provided his clarification. This is what Cormier said in the DC and RC show about it:
Look at what Conor McGregor did or beating Conor McGregor did for Dustin Poirier. Look at what it did for Khabib Nurmagomedov. We’re not even talking about all the levels at which this just makes sense. You have Islam facing Conor after the issues Conor has had with Khabib. You have Islam fighting Conor, the biggest star in MMA coming back to the UFC.
Needless to say, the chances are slim for a Makhachev vs. McGregor matchup. Moreover, McGregor is presumed to take on Michael Chandler at UFC 300. The fight is even rumored to be happening at middleweight. However, McGregor heads into the bout with a must-win scenario.
